Board of Directors
L. Sue Hoffman, MSSW, LMFT, LCSW
President

Sue is a native of St. Louis, Missouri, who has resided in Austin, Texas, since 1975.  She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Methodist University and her Master of Science in Social Work degree from the University of Texas at Austin. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.  She is a Certified EMDR Therapist, an Approved Consultant in EMDR for EMDRIA and a Facilitator for the EMDR Institute.  She has served on the Professional and Public Relations Committee, the Audit Committee, the Plan of Work Committee, the Leadership Committee and The Structure, Function and Bylaws Committee for EMDRIA.  Sue’s current practice includes work with adults and adolescents in the areas of trauma, mood and anxiety disorders. She has extensive experience with issues of loss and grief, separation and divorce, foster and adoption issues, visual impairment and blindness, gender identity, developmental delay, life balance and spiritual issues.  She enjoys outdoor activities with her husband, Mart and their two adult children.


David Sherwood, Ph.D.
Secretary

David Sherwood, Ph.D. is a psychologist in private practice in Poughkeepsie, New York, specializing in the treatment of PTSD, stress, and affective disorders. He is an EMDRIA Approved Consultant in EMDR and an ASCH Approved Consultant in Hypnotherapy. He has served on various EMDRIA committees including the Regional Coordinating Committee (Chair, 2003-2005) and Standards and Training Committee. Formerly, he served as Supervising Psychologist, Director of Consultation and Education, and Division Chief for Outpatient Mental Health Services with the Dutchess County Department of Mental Hygiene in Poughkeepsie. He brings a spiritual and integrative focus to his work.


Sharon Rollins, MS, LPC
President-Elect

Sharon Rollins, MS, LPC, graduated from Baylor University in Waco, TX. She also studied at Massey University in Palmerston North, New Zealand while on a Rotary Ambassadorial Year Scholarship. She has worked at Family Counseling & Children’s Services of Waco, Texas for over 12 years. She is an EMDRIA Approved Consultant, has served on the EMDRIA Standards and Training Committee, and currently serves as the Heart of Texas EMDRIA Regional Coordinator. She has been instrumental in expanding the knowledge about and use of EMDR in Central Texas.  She currently works with children, adolescents, adults, and families around adjustment and behavioral issues, depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, divorce, and blended family issues. She especially enjoys being able to offer EMDR to low-income clients who might not otherwise be able to afford such an efficient and specialized therapy.


Amy Konkle, M.D.
Secretary-Elect

Dr. Amy Konkle is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine and completed her psychiatric residency training there.  She currently has an outpatient private practice in Indianapolis treating adults with the full range of psychiatric disorders, with a special focus on trauma.  She is a Certified Therapist and Approved Consultant in EMDR.  Dr. Konkle is a Volunteer Faculty Member of the Department of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine.  She is in the process of developing a university-affiliated mini-fellowship training program in trauma for the Indianapolis area, hoping to include EMDRIA Approved basic EMDR training for physician Category I credit, as well as CEU's for other disciplines.  During more than thirty years of practice, Dr. Konkle has worked in a variety of settings, in-patient and out-patient.  She was a co-founder of the Indiana Psychiatric Consortium, and was Chair for the Department of Psychiatry for St. Vincent Hospital for ten years.  She is also a Certified Practitioner of Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy.


Uri Bergmann, Ph.D.
Director

Uri Bergmann, Ph.D., is in full-time private practice, in Commack and Bellmore, N.Y. He is an EMDR Institute Senior Facilitator and Presenter and an EMDR International Association Approved Trainer and Consultant. Dr. Bergmann is currently serving on the board of directors of the EMDR International Association. He is a lecturer and consultant on EMDR, the neurobiology of EMDR and the integration of EMDR with psychodynamic and  ego-state treatment. He has authored and published journal articles and book chapters on the neurobiology of EMDR and serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards of Traumatology and the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research.  He has been awarded board certification in Clinical Social Work (American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work), Behavioral Medicine (International Academy of Behavioral Medicine, Counseling and Psychotherapy) and Pain Management (American Academy of Pain Management).


Donald deGraffenried, MSW, LCSW
Director

Donald F. deGraffenried, LCSW is the Clinical Director for the Dixwell Newhallville

Community Mental Health Services in New Haven, Connecticut and maintains a private practice specializing in the treatment of complex trauma. He is a graduate of The UCONN School of Social Work and has over 27 years of community mental health experience. Don is an Approved Facilitator for the EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Program and an Approved EMDRIA Consultant.  He has been a presenter at the 2002, 2005 and 2007 EMDRIA Annual Conferences. He is also the author of four articles on home-based family interventions with multi-problem families and is currently writing a book titled “Developing EMDR Practice in Community Mental Health & Agency Settings: Working with Administrative Concerns, Clinical Apprehension and Implementation Reluctance” for the EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Program. Don resides with his family in Hamden, CT., in close proximity to the Sleeping Giant State Park.


Cocoy Garcia, Ph.D., MFT
Director

Cocoy Garcia, Ph.D. is in private practice in Chula Vista, California.  She was born in Mexico, lived in the Middle East for two years and came to the US to finish her doctorate in Psychology.  Cocoy has worked for hospitals, community agencies, police departments, universities and private practice.  She is an EMDRIA Certified Therapist and Approved Consultant.  


Sara Gilman, MFT
Director

Sara Gilman, MFT is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist since 1986, having graduated with a Masters of Science degree in Clinical Psychology from California State University at Fullerton.  She has been in private practice since 1983 specializing in the areas of Substance Abuse, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Performance Enhancement for business professionals and athletes and other performers.  Ms. Gilman is a Fellow, American Academy of Experts In Traumatic Stress, an EMDRIA Approved Consultant, a Master Practitioner of NLP and a Board Certified Hypnotherapist.  She is also Board Certified in Forensic Traumatology and has testified as an expert witness and treating therapist in numerous cases involving trauma and PTSD. Ms. Gilman was a San Diego Firefighter for 4 years and served on the Critical Incident Debriefing Team for 10 years.


Dorothy Hyde, LCSW, DCSW
Director

Dorothy Hyde is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in full time private practice in Hicksville and Northport, New York. During more than 25 years in practice, she has had a variety of professional experiences which has included; Administration, College Teaching and Field Instruction Supervision. She created and co-hosted the talk show "Visions"that was aired on Public Radio.

Dorothy is an EMDRIA Certified Therapist and Approved Consultant. Before being elected a Director, Dorothy served on the EMDRIA Membership Committee.


Gary Peterson, M.D.
Director

Dr. Peterson is a psychiatrist in private practice in Chapel Hill, NC at the Southeast Institute for Group and Family Therapy doing individual and family therapy, psychopharmacology, teaching and clinical consultation. He is known for his ability to synthesize information from a wide variety of sources and to present them with clarity and skill.

 

He is Board Certified in Psychiatry and Child Psychiatry; Distinguished Fellow, American Psychiatric Association, and Fellow, American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

 

Dr. Peterson is an EMDRIA Certified Therapist, Approved Consultant and Regional Coordinator. In addition, he is a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research. Since 1998 he has served on numerous EMDRIA committees. In 2007, he received EMDRIA’s Outstanding Contribution & Service Award.
